 Frequently Asked Questions

How do I Alphabetize my OneNote Folders?

1.  In Windows Explorer set the option to show hidden files under the View Tab of Hidden Files and Folders as part of the Folder Options

2.  Close OneNote

3.  Navigate to the folder you want sections to be in alphabetical order

4.  Delete *.onetoc file in this folder  (e.g. One Note Table of Contents.onetoc)

5.  Boot OneNote

Is the Handwriting Recognition System "trainable"??

No, well not exactly. The HWR system is trainable, but just not in the way that is assumed by most users. This question usually refers to the ability to create different stroke or character patterns that can be used as letters, numbers or symbols. The Microsoft Handwriting Recognition Engine is a "segment" or word based system and the capability to create different patterns with an expectation that this will impact recognition results is a fallacy. The results of recognition are a function of what words are in the dictionaries, not how the characters are formed.

What are the key components of "good" recognition?

Words in the dictionaries, clear letters using upper and lower case, spaced evenly and on the same horizontal plane.
Also affecting recognition is letter/word segmentation, determining Case, and punctuation.

What are the Dictionaries?

The TabletPC uses three dictionaries; System, User and Application:
The System Dictionary is the main recognition dictionary. It is based upon the language supported with the installation of the TabletPC Operating System and is available for recognition at all times.
The User Dictionary is a supplemental dictionary that is shared between the Speech and Handwriting recognition system. This supplemental dictionary is used to provide alternate words to the System Dictionary and is available for use at all times.
The Application Dictionary is created by developers to create additional words for recognition. The Application Dictionary is loaded and in-use only when the Application it is associated with is being used.

What are the issues with Special Character recognition?

Recognition of Special and Accented characters can be accomplished with a set of certain requirements being met. First , the Special characters must be available in the specific recognizers. When you are testing, make sure you have selected the correct "default or base recognizer". You can do this using the Language Bar, or selecting the Recognizer in the MS Journal Options, Tools Menu choice.
Depending on the specific character, other letters in the words and the lexicon selected your characters can be recognized.
The following characters have been successfully tested and recognized. Your Mileage May Vary :)
À Á Â Ã Ä Æ Ç È É Ê Ë Ì Í Î Ï Ð Ñ Ò Ó Ô Õ Ö Ù Ú Û Ü Ý ß
à á â ã ä æ ç è é ê ë ì í î ï ð ñ ò ó ô õ ö ø ù ú û ü ý þ ÿ
An alternative that may enhance recognition would be to add the Special Character SPID available from our website. It may have a positive influence.
